What is the ECD FWG?
The Early Child Development Funders Working Group (ECD-FWG) is eight very diverse foundations forming a cross-Canada learning network with a deeply shared commitment to children.
The ECD-FWG was established in 2009. Its goal is for every child to enjoy a high quality, publicly-funded, early education and care program.
The ECD-FWG does not solicit or accept applications for funding. Rather, it is a resource for its members, supporting collaboration and knowledge sharing that improves the effectiveness of our philanthropy relating to young children. To date the ECD-FWG has shared investment in the creation and promotion of Early Years Study 3, the Early Childhood Education Report 2014 and ECinCanada.
What Foundations belong to the ECD-FWG?
Members of the Early Child Development Funders Working Group include: Atkinson Charitable Foundation, The Lucie and André Chagnon Foundation, Lyle S. Hallman Foundation, The Lawson Foundation, Margaret and Wallace McCain Family Foundation, The J.W. McConnell Family Foundation, The Muttart Foundation and Jimmy Pratt Foundation.
What is the Open Letter?
The Open Letter is an attempt by the ECD-FWG to support a wider dialogue during an election year, around the importance of investing in Canada’s future – it’s children. Eight Foundations have come together to urge Canada’s politicians to recognize that ECEC is a must-have element building a more prosperous country and to invest in quality early childhood education and care for all children across Canada. Research results on the value of quality early childhood education and care are strong, clear and significant. To date, as a country, we have failed. Canada is near the bottom of the international ladder in terms of investment in ECEC. On the positive side, there has been progress on ECEC in every province and territory even without a federal partner. It is time for all political parties to commit to support high-quality ECEC for children wherever they live in this country. You can read the Open Letter for our full explanation.
What are you asking for?
We are asking for federal parties to take a stand and commit to investing 1.1% of the GDP (the OECD average) in quality early childhood education and care.
Why an Open Letter?
An Open Letter provides an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of investing in our children and gives the federal parties a great opportunity to commit to supporting high-quality ECEC for children wherever they live in Canada. During an election year, party leaders have the opportunity and obligation to show leadership. We are raising our voices for the first time and hope that many more Canadians will do the same. ECEC is a powerful tool to enable children and Canada to success. It’s time for ECEC it to be prominent on the public agenda.
How does the ECD-FWG operate?
The ECD-FWG has worked collaboratively since 2009, investing in the Early Years Study 3, the Early Childhood Education Report 2014 and ECinCanada. This is the first Open Letter signed by its eight members.
